Saw Palmetto Plus™
is a unique herbal formula for men, designed to support optimal
prostate function, libido, sexual function and vitality. Benign
Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) appears to be caused by the accumulation
of a break-down form of testosterone in the prostate gland known
as DHT (Dihydrotestosterone). DHT stimulates the cells of the prostate
to multiply excessively, eventually causing BPH
Saw Palmetto(Serenoa
repens) contains natural sterols and fatty acids that have been
found to possess tremendous health benefits to the genito-urinary
tract. Most importantly, Saw palmetto inhibits the formation of
DHT.
Saw Palmetto has also
been found to have an antiandrogenic effect which may be helpful
in preventing or stopping prostate cancer. A double-blind, placebo-controlled
study has shown that Saw palmetto significantly reduces the number
of nuclear androgen receptors in male prostate glands. Prostate
cancer is known to be androgen-sensitive and responds to treatments
that counteracts the effects of androgen and/or removes its source.
Pygeum africanum
bark contains several different active compounds, which interfere
with the development of BPH by different and complimentary mechanisms.
Phytosterols, essentailly beta-sitosterols, inhibit the synthesis
of prostaglandins and counteract inflammatory symptoms in the prostate.
Pentacyclic triterpenes possess anti-edematous activity. Ferulic
esters possess cholesterol lowering activity. Cholesterol deposits
and metabolites of cholesterol within the prostate are thought to
play a role in the development of BPH.
Many double blind clinical
studies have shown that Pygeum reduces the symptoms of BPH, including
frequent day and night urination, hesitation, weak stream and dribbling
after urination.
Pumpkin seeds
(Cucurbita pepo) are particularly rich in an oil that inhibits
the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which inhibits the conversion of testosterone
into dihydrotestosterone, the principle cause of BPH. Additionally,
Beta-sitosterol, present in Pumpkin seed oil, has been shown to
be a strong inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis, exerting a marked
anti-inflammatory action within the prostate tissue.
Nettle
Root Extract (Urtica dioica)
Nettle root
extract affects sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), a protein that
carries sex hormones (such as testosterone or estrogen) in the human
body. This may explain why it has been found to help reduce symptoms
of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Although less frequently used
than saw palmetto or pygeum, clinical trials have shown that nettle
root extract is beneficial in men with BPH.
