PHYTOBIOTICis a unique herbal formula designed to enhance immune activity
against a broad spectrum of viral, bacterial, and fungal organisms.
Echinacea
angustifolia (Purple Coneflower) is a perennial herb native
to North America. American Indians used Echinacea more than any
other herb for the treatment of various illnesses. They used the
root internally and externally for everything from infections to
snake bites. Echinacea contains polysaccharides that inhibit the
enzyme Hyaluronidase, found in snake venom and secreted by bacteria
to break down the ground substance that holds body cells together,
allowing snake venom and microorganisms to penetrate within the
tissues where they can do their damage.
Echinacea
also contains a wide array of other active immune stimulating components.
Inulin activates part of the immune system known as the alternate
complement pathway, which enhances the movement of white blood cells
into the area to destroy bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms.
Echinacea polysaccharides activate T-Lymphocytes, Macrophages, and
Natural Killer Cells. Echinacea has been shown to possess antiviral
activity against several viruses including influenza, Epstein-Barr
virus & herpes virus and has been shown to prevent colds, upper
respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, Candida
albicans and other infections.
Astragalus membranaceus (Astragalus) is one of the most popular
herbs in China. It has been used for thousands of years by the Chinese
to tonify the vital force of the body. Astragalus has been shown
to increase Macrophage phagocytosis (the engulfing or "eating" of
solid material, e.g. bacteria, allergens, and immune complexes)
within six hours of treatment and last for more than 72 hours. It
has also been shown to increase Interleukin-2 activity ten fold.
Astragalus
extract stimulates T-Cells in healthy animals and restores immune
function in cancer patients. It has been found to significantly
improve the long-term survival rate in patients with cancer of the
uterus and breasts treated by irradiation plus Astragalus extract.
Clinical trials have also demonstrated a significantly increased
survival rate in lung cancer patients treated with chemotherapy
and Astragalus compared to those patients treated with chemotherapy
alone.
Hydrastis
canadensis (Goldenseal) extract exhibits a broad spectrum of
antibiotic activity. It has shown activity against bacteria, protozoa,
and fungi, including Staphylococcus, Streptomyces, Chlamydia, Corynebacterium
diptheria, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typlhi, Vibrio cholerae,
Diplococcus pneumoniae, Pseudomonas, Shigella dysenteriae, Entamoeba
histolytica, Giardia, and Candida albicans. The berberine in Goldenseal
appears to inhibit the adhesion of bacteria to host cells and prevent
their growth. Berberine has been shown to be 3 times more effective
at lowering fevers than aspirin in rats. However, aspirin suppresses
the fever via inhibiting prostaglandins, while PHYTOBIOTIC berberine
appears to lower fever by enhancing the immune system.
Sambucus
nigra (Elderberry) has bright black berries that have been used
since the days of Hippocrates as a remedy for colds, coughs, and
upper respiratory infections. In a double blind clinical trial on
patients infected with the influenza virus 90% of the group taking
Elderberry recovered completely from the fever, chills, body aches,
and cough twice as fast (within 3 days rather than 6 or more days)
as the group receiving the placebo.
Elderberry
disarms viruses by binding to them and preventing them from piercing
cells within the body. Viruses can do no harm unless they can get
inside human cells and reproduce themselves. Bioflavonoids found
in the berries are thought to coat the virus and inhibit the action
of an enzyme called neuraminidase that otherwise would break down
the cell wall membrane, allowing the virus to get inside. Elderberry
extract has been found to be effective against eight different strains
of influenza including the Beijing, Singapore, Hong Kong, Ann Arbor,
Texas, Panama, Yamajata, and Shangdong viruses. In addition to its
direct antiviral effects, Elderberry also enhances immunity by increasing
the production of lymphocytes and acts as a potent antioxidant.
Andrographis paniculata is used in China as an official medicine
for inflammation, colds, fevers, laryngitis and diarrhea. In a recent
double blind placebo controlled study performed in Sweden, 85 mg
taken three times daily for five days significantly reduced symptoms
of the common cold and sinusitis, as well as time off work. Andrographolide
D, found in the standardized extract, has been shown to be an effective
agent against ST enterocoloxin, the most common cause of neonatal
diarrhea. Additionally, Andrographolide has been found to be as
effective as cisplatin (a conventional chemotherapeutic agent) against
three prostate cancer cell line in in vitro studies.
