Vitis vinifera (Grape) seeds contain a flavanol group similar to bioflavonoids, but distinct by being more highly water-soluble, bioavailable and electrophillic (capable of scavenging free radicals - shown to be 20 times more potent than Vitamin C and 50 times more potent than Vitamin E).

The highest quality standardized Grape Seed Extract contains 98-100% polyphenols, including Catechin, Epicatechin and Oligomeric Proanthocyanidin Complexes (OPC), which are composed of dimers, trimers, and tetramers (the most bioactive components) but not the longer tannins.

Catechin, and especially the stabilized Catechins found in OPC, reduce excessive histamine release from mast cells and prevent its production by blocking the enzyme histidine decarboxylase. OPC also inhibits the excessive production of hyaluronidase, which activates mast cell degranulation and release of histamine into the surrounding tissue.

Camelia sinensis (Green Tea) extract contains at least seven functionally active compounds including (+)-catechin (C), (+)-gallocatechin (GC), (-)-epicatechin (EC), (-)-epigallo-catechin (EGC), (-)-epicatechin gallate (ECG) and (-)-epigallo-catechin gallate (EGCG). It has been shown to possess very strong antioxidant activity against hydroxyl (OH) and superoxide (02-) free radicals, as well as lipid peroxidation. It has been shown to be many times more potent than Vitamin C or Vitamin E, to protect against Vitamin E consumption by free radicals and to chelate Iron. Green Tea provides potent anti-allergy activity as well as antimutagenic activity. (+)Catechin and (-)Epicatechin have been shown to inhibit deoxyribose (DNA) damage by reacting with hydroxyl (OH) free radicals.), antibacterial, hypocholesterolemic, antitumor and cancer preventive activities. The active Green Tea compounds were tested in vitro against each of four human tumor cells lines (MCF-7 breast carcinoma, HT-29 colon carcinoma, A-427 lung carcinoma and UACC-375 melanoma) and found to possess significant chemopreventive activity.

Quercetin is another important flavonoid. It is a potent antioxidant of its own and functions in sparing Vitamin C. It has significant anti-allergy activity through its ability to inhibit both the manufacture and release of histamine and other allergic / inflammatory agents. Quercetin also demonstrates significant antitumor activity against a wide range of cancers, including squamous cell carcinoma; leukemia; and cancers of the breast, ovaries, colon, rectum, and brain in animal and in vitro studies.

Vitamin C functions as a principle antioxidant of aqueous (water) environments in the body, both outside and inside the human cells. It is an essential nutrient that the body must consume on a daily basis to survive. Vitamin C is responsible for regenerating Vitamin E and works along with the antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase. It functions as both an antioxidant to protects cells of the body and a pro-oxidant in the fight against viruses. It needs to be taken in association with flavonoids such as OPC and Quercetin for optimal function and buffering of its pro-oxidant effects.
