Esprogen contains plants with estrogenic and progesterogenic
activity. Phytoestrogens, or plant estrogen, have what is known
as an "alterative" effect on a woman's hormones. When estrogen
levels are low, phytoestrogens can exert a direct estrogenic effect.
When estrogen is high, phytoestrogens bind to estrogen receptors
and reduce the overall estrogenic activity. Plant progesterone
precursors enhance the body's ability to produce the appropriate
balance of progesterone that the body needs in ratio to the estrogen
content. Together, the herbal ingredients in Esprogen give
a woman the balance her hormones need.
Angelica
sinensis (Dong quai) is perhaps the best known phytoestrogen.
It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of menstrual
disorders, including irregular menses, premenstrual syndrome,
endometriosis, fibroids and menopausal hot flashes through its
alterative action on estrogen.
Essential
oils in Angelica have been shown to relax smooth muscles of the
uterus. Additionally, Angelica has been found to possess pain
relieving and mild tranquilizing action. In one study, its pain
relieving action was found to be greater than that of aspirin.
Its pain relieving and smooth muscle relaxing actions support
is historical use for uterine cramps and headaches.
Dioscorea villosa (Wild Yam ) contains progesterone precursors
(diosgenin and pregnenolone) as well as anti-inflammatory and
spasmolytic components that have been used to reduce the spasms
associated with the cramping pain of menses, ovulation and afterpains
following childbirth.
Glycyrrhiza
glabra (Licorice root) is another phytoestrogen that exerts
a balancing effect on estrogen metabolism. The estrogenic action
of licorice is due to its isoflavone content. It appears to be
extremely beneficial in relieving the symptoms of premenstrual
syndrome (depression, craving sweets, weight gain, breast tenderness,
etc.) due to its ability to balance the estrogen to progesterone
ratio. Vital FormulationsT uses only DeGlycyrrhizinated Licorice
(DGL) in its formula to prevent potassium loss.
Tunera diffusa (Damiana) has been found to bind to progesterone
receptors and increase progesterone activity, while antagonizing
cell growth of breast cancer cell lines.
Cimicifuga
(Black Cohosh)
has been shown in double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials
to have significant benefit in treating both the physical and
mental symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, juvenile menstrual disorders
and menopause.
In
addition to phytoestrogens found in Cimicifuga, other plant constituents
have been found to work via other mechanisms. Recently, a study
concluded that at least three different compounds, including an
estrogen-binding flavonoid, act synergistically to suppress lutenizing
hormone (LH), which is considered to be an important initiating
hormone for hot flashes in menopause. Unlike synthetic estrogens
Cimicifuga does not alter Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) levels
or stimulate the growth of tumor cells. In several clinical trials,
Cimicifuga has been shown to provide significant improvement in
86% of all patients within 4 weeks of onset of therapy. Studies
show that Cimicifuga reduces menopausal symptoms of hot flashes,
perspiration, headache, vertigo, heart palpitations, ringing in
the ears, nervousness, irritability, sleep disturbances, weariness,
and depressive moodiness, while increasing motivation and mood.
