Should You Stockpile Cipro for Anthrax?
March 18, 2003 – Scientist are now predicting that if a terrorist
drops as little as 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of anthrax spores over New
York City (a city of roughly 10 million people), more than 100,000 deaths
would be likely to occur, unless those exposed begin taking antibiotics
within 48 hours.
"
The problem is anthrax is such a rapidly progressing disease that treatment
needs to be initiated within 6 hours, said Lawrence Wein, a mathematician
at Stanford University. According to Wein’s model, a delay of five
days would double the total number of deaths to 200,000.
On the other hand, enhanced distribution of medicine and supportive hospital
care could cut the number of deaths by half to 50,000. That finding prompted
Wein and the others to suggest that handing out antibiotics to the entire
population might be a good defensive tactic. However, the National Pharmaceutical
Stockpile contains only enough Cipro (Ciprofloxacin) to treat 12 million
people for 60 day.

Antibiotics can treat the anthrax infection if given quickly. Anthrax
is susceptible in the early phase to the antibiotics Cipro, Penicillin,
Doxycycline, and fluoroquinolones. Cipro and Doxycycline are the only
drugs approved for biological attacks - specifically for inhaled anthrax
- although they had never been directly tested in humans until after
the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. If you are exposed to
Anthrax, you should get a prescription for antibiotics as soon as
possible. I
will prescribe it for you immediately if you are exposed. Additionally,
I will also prescribe supportive therapy that can block the Anthrax
Lethal Toxin and improve your chances for a quick and complete recovery.
While antibiotics can kill the anthrax bacterium, they cannot inactivate
the lethal toxin it produces. By the time symptoms of anthrax contracted
by inhalation have appeared, it is generally too late to rescue an
individual with antibiotics, because he or she will succumb to the
toxin the bacteria
has already produced. Pulmonary anthrax is usually (90%) fatal despite
antibiotic therapy and intensive care.
