In a new study published in January 2003, Belgian researchers found that
glucosamine sulfate reduced cartilge destruction by 60% in patients
with mild wear-and-tear type of arthritis of the knee, known as OsteoArthritis
(OA). Patients with the most severe OA had a 42% chance of developing
a 0.5mm joint space narrowing every 3 years. (Osteoarthritis Cartilage
2003 Jan;11(1):1-5)
Glucosamine
sulfate is a natural substance that is found in the joints
and plays an important role in the maintenance of optimal
cartilage health. In this three-year randomized, placebo-controlled,
prospective study, of 212 patients with Osteoarthritis
of the knee, half received 1500mg of oral glucosamine sulfate
or a placebo. X-Ray analysis of these patients had revealed
that there was no significant joint-space loss in the 106
patients on glucosamine sulphate (-0.06 mm) loss over 3
years, while the 106 patients on the placebo had a progressive
joint-space narrowing (-0.31 mm) over the 3 years of the
study. (Lancet 2001 Jan 27;357(9252):251-6)
