America Going
to Waist
TOP
The
American waistline continues to expand, with 61%
of adults now considered overweight, the government
reported Thursday. And a growing number of Americans
are not just overweight, but obese, the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention said. Thirty-five
percent are slightly or moderately overweight
and 26% are considered obese, or grossly overweight.
A
body-mass index of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight,
while obesity is 30 or higher.
Body Mass
Index Formula

English
Formula
BMI
= [Weight in pounds ÷ Height in inches ÷ Height
in inches] x 703
Example A
person weighing 210 pounds and 6 feet tall would
have a BMI = 210 pounds divided by 72 inches divided
by 72 inches multiplied by 703 = 28.5

The
findings are part of the 1999 National Health
and Nutrition Examination Survey, which measured
the height and weight of 1,615 people over age
20. Those figures are used to calculate body mass
index.
People
are getting heavier from a combination of too
many calories and too little exercise, said Jeff
Lancashire, a spokesman for the National Center
for Health Statistics. "Over the last few years,
we've seen that people's fat intake was dropping,
but they're eating more calories," Lancashire
said. "So while people are turning to the diet
foods, they're eating twice as much." And, 40
percent of Americans are inactive.
In
the last 40 years since the first such survey,
in 1960, the number of overweight Americans ballooned
from 43 % to 61% of the population. If this trend
continues at this rate, 90% of the U.S. population
will be overweight by 2040.
