St.
Johns Wort Effective for PMS
TOP
To
investigate whether St. Johns Wort (Hypericum
perforatum) could relieve symptoms of premenstrual
syndrome, nineteen women with premenstrual syndrome
who were in otherwise good physical and mental
health and not taking other treatments for premenstrual
syndrome, took hypericum tablets for two complete
menstrual cycles (300 mg hypericum extract per
day standardized to 900 micrograms hypericin).
Symptoms were rated daily throughout the trial
using a validated measure. RESULTS: There were
significant reductions in all outcome measures.
The degree of improvement in overall premenstrual
syndrome scores between baseline and the end of
the trial was 51%, with over two-thirds of the
sample demonstrating at least a 50% decrease in
symptom severity. Tolerance and compliance with
the treatment were encouraging.

Dr.
Hansens note: The good news is that
this small dose of St. Johns worked, relieving
symptoms of two-thirds of the women by 50%.
Even better news, however, is that the clinicians
who conducted this study only used one-third
of the typical dose to get these results. They
should have known that the standard dose is
300 mg three times daily. If they had done this
they probably would have seen a much higher
success rate and an even greater reduction of
symptoms.
