Grapes May
be Good for Your Heart & Your IQ
For years, researchers have been telling us that
wine is the reason the French have so little heart
disease compared to the rest of the world, inspite
of the fact that their gourmet taste buds cannot
resist creamy sauces, cheese and butter. A daily
glass of red wine has also been shown to help stave
off heart disease and even cancer, but now a study
of nearly 700 Danish adults ages 29 to 34 suggests
that wine drinkers also tend to score higher on
intelligence tests too.
The study
was reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine,
a journal published by the American Medical
Association. Our results suggest that wine
drinking is associated with optimal social, intellectual
and personality functioning, wrote the studys
author, Erik Mortensen of the Danish Epidemiology
Science Center in Copenhagen.
Previous studies have shown that light to moderate
red wine consumption relieves stress and improves
blood circulation, deterrents to both heart disease
and mental decline. Nutrients found in red wine,
known as polyphenols, are also believed to be the
key ingredients found to lower the risk of several
other key health problems, including stroke, cancer
of the upper digestive
tract and the lung, age related blindness (Macular
Degeneration) and hip fractures.
Note: It is the polyphenols, known as flavanols,
that are the beneficial ingredients in grapes, not
the alcohol. Although alcohol does concentrate the
flavanols, it of course is also toxic to the liver.
Research has shown that three glasses of grape juice
equals 1 glass of wine. Even more concentrated are
the seed of grapes. I believe Grape Seed Extract
is the most potent preventive medicine you can take.
