Chinese Turn
to Herbs to Prevent SARS
The SARS virus, has now infected about 4000 Chinese in a country with
a population of 1.5 billion and it has killed 148. The SARS virus is
being watched so closely because it is a new strain of the common cold
virus for which there no known cure. It is relatively lethal, but as
the numbers show it has relatively low infectivity. By comparison, Influenza
or the "flu" can affect anyone, and epidemics of flu occur
during the winter months nearly every year. The flu is highly contagious.
On average, flu causes approximately 20,000 deaths and 148,000 hospitalizations
each year in the United States. More than 90% of flu-related deaths are
in immune compromised people aged 65 years or older.
The health of the immune system,
both in battling the flu and in resisting SARS, appears to be the best
defense. For this reason millions of Chinese
are boiling a combination of traditional Chinese herbs to take against
SARS. The use of this traditional remedy known as "Ba Wei," is
supported by research from the University of Hong Kong School of Chinese
Medicine. To Americans, the boiling chunks of brown bark, yellowish slivers
of roots and dried light-green flower buds would look more like garden
mulch than medicine.
There is still no
proven cure for SARS, though scientists in the West have narrowed their
search to several drugs that appear to have the best
chance. For now, SARS treatment amounts to keeping patients isolated
and dealing with their symptoms while the infection runs its course.
Some Western-trained physicians believe there is something to learn
from Chinese medicine. However, many still believe it is just a bunch
of mumbo
jumbo. They argue that many cures have not passed the rigorous, scientific
clinical trials that Western drugs are subjected to before they are
deemed safe and effective.
Chinese medicine
is based on a belief that the health is a matter of balance. When the
body is out of balance, people get sick. Zhang Binghou,
chief physician at the Beijing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital,
dismisses critics as people who do not appreciate the centuries of
tradition, practice and observation. Chinese medicine focuses on
the whole body
and a complete recovery. "We not only use herbs to kill germs. We
also use herbs to improve the function of the organs," he said.
Dr.
Hansen’s Recommendation
I agree with the Chinese that balance in life is the key to staying
healthy. Get plenty of rest, drink plenty of water, eliminate refined
sugar, exercise
regularly, participate in de-stressing and relaxing activities
weekly and enjoy your life. The only prevention of disease is from
within
the body. Worrying will only suppress the immune system. The only
cure for
SARS or any other infection that may come along is the body’s own
immune system.
Like the Chinese, I recommend an herbal combination to enhance the immune
response. The good news is that you do not have to boil any roots, bark
or leaves to take my formula. Its already in capsules. I recommend that
everyone keep Phytobiotic on hand. If you travel take 2 capsules twice
daily. If you get any symptoms of a fever, body aches, cough, etc., take
3 capsules 3 times daily.
Additionally, I recommend
taking Flu
Solution™ for fever, chills,
body aches and pain. Flu Solution.™ is a homeopathic medicine developed
in France more than 60 years ago. In Europe where it is the number one
over-the-counter flu medication, it is known as Oscillococcinum. It stops
the fever, chills, body aches and pains of the Flu, or other similar
virus, within a few short hours, by enhancing the body’s own immune
system.
