Magnesium-rich foods Reduce the Risk of Diabetes
July 5, 2007
Eating more magnesium-rich foods, like green leafy vegetables, grains and nuts, may reduce the risk of Adult Onset (Type-2) Diabetes, suggests a comprehensive analysis of previous clinical studies. This is good news for the estimated 25 million people who are affected by diabetes in the US, as well as the rest of us that don’t yet have it, since it is considered to be a common part of aging in America.
Dietary surveys have shown that most adults do not consume the RDA for magnesium (320 mg per day for women and 420 mg per day for men).
Researchers, Susanna Larsson and Alicia Wolk, at Stockholm's Karolinska Institutet, found that for every 100 milligrams increase in magnesium intake, the risk of developing type-2 diabetes decreased by 15%. Their analysis published in the Journal of Internal Medicine
"The potential protective role of magnesium intake against type-2 diabetes may be due to improvement of insulin sensitivity," said the researchers. "Studies in animals have demonstrated an adverse effect of magnesium deficiency on glucose-induced insulin secretion and insulin-mediated glucose uptake. In contrast, magnesium supplementation was shown to prevent fructose-induced insulin resistance and reduce the development of diabetes in a rat model of spontaneous type-2 diabetes."
Although these researchers stopped short of recommending magnesium supplements for Type-2 Diabetes prevention, they were confidant enough to say that eating magnesium-rich food "seems prudent."
In the US, there are approximately 25 million people with Type-2 Diabetes, which is about 8% of the population. The total costs associated with medical care for these diabetics is thought to be as high as $132 billion dollars annually. Of this amount, $92 billion is the direct cost from medication, according to 2002 data from the American Diabetes Association.
