ADD & ADDERAL*

QUESTION: Dr. Hansen, my son is 22 years old and he is ADD. Since 3 years ago, he's been on Adderal, 10 mg, one a day. My questions are as follows:

  1. Does Acuity have a conflict with Adderal*?
  2. If so, should Acuity be used instead of Adderal*?
  3. How long does it take for Acuity to start making an impact?

Thanks for your assistance. Sue

ANSWER: Dear Susan, Thanks for your email. Apparently, your 22 year old son has been on Adderal* for 3 years. This drug is an Amphetamine with high potential for dependence.
I would recommend natural alternatives to help him get off of the Adderal altogether. Please see the Physicians Drug Reference info quoted below:

"AMPHETAMINES HAVE A HIGH POTENTIAL FOR ABUSE. ADMINISTRATION OF AMPHETAMINES FOR PROLONGED PERIODS OF TIME MAY LEAD TO DRUG DEPENDENCE AND MUST BE AVOIDED. PARTICULAR ATTENTION SHOULD BE PAID TO THE POSSIBILITY OF SUBJECTS OBTAINING AMPHETAMINES FOR NON THERAPEUTIC USE OR DISTRIBUTION TO OTHERS, AND THE DRUGS SHOULD BE PRESCRIBED OR DISPENSED SPARINGLY. "

A single entity amphetamine product combining the neutral sulfate salts of dextroamphetamine and amphetamine, with the dextroisomer of amphetamine
saccharate and 6, I-amphetamine aspartate.

Amphetamines are non-catecholamine sympathomimetic amines with CNS stimulant
activity. Peripheral actions include elevation of systolic and diastolic
blood pressures and weak bronchodilator and respiratory stimulant action.

There is neither specific evidence which clearly establishes the mechanism
whereby amphetamine produces mental and behavioral effects in children, nor
conclusive evidence regarding how these effects relate to the condition of
the central nervous system."

In place of Adderal, or Ritalin, etc., I recommend a product known as Acuity for children age 6-12. For teenagers or adults, I recommend higher potency products: Tranquil Clarity plus GSE Ultra 110. Additionally, for all age groups I recommend testing for Neurohormones and treating the deficiencies and excesses with the appropriate nutritional precursors. These products do not cause any adverse interactions with Adderal or Ritalin, however, the amphetamines do not cure the problem and are associated significant adverse effects.
